Marian Bergeson Award Presented to
South Orange County Community College District
Board of Trustees Member Marcia Milchiker
South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees member and dual member of AAUW Laguna Beach, Marcia Milchiker was named the recipient of the Marian Bergeson Award, presented annually by the Orange County School Board Association (OCSBA) to a trustee who has provided outstanding governing board service and community service to promote and enhance public education.
Trustee Milchiker is a long-serving Governing Board Member, having served numerous times as president, vice-president, and clerk. In addition to her trusteeship, which she says is her most important responsibility, Trustee Milchiker is a 21-year volunteer of the Orange County School Board Association, a founder of both the Orange County Community College Legislative Task Force and the Orange County Chapter of the California Elected Women’s Association for Education and Research (serving three terms as president), and the American Association of University Women (serving two terms as president). In this capacity she established several endowed scholarships and helped secure more than a million dollars annually in scholarships for both Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College students.
Interim Chancellor Debra L. Fitzsimons said, “After many years of committed service to our community, Marcia Milchiker is being recognized for what we’ve always known: She is a champion for student success and is unwavering in her dedication to our colleges and district. We are very proud of Marcia and deeply appreciate all she has accomplished for us.”
As a research biologist and biology professor, Marcia has personally conducted research to offer testimony to state legislators that Emeritus Institute classes are vital to older adults. For that reason she was asked to serve on the UC Irvine Community Advisory Board for the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, of which she is currently a member.
Marcia is a member of several AAUW branches, including AAUW Laguna Beach. We are very proud of the work that Marcia does to promote the advancement of women and girls.
